The benchmark
for all print
Sheet fed printing? Lithography? Offset? Let's just call it litho.
Litho is the most universal of all the printing processes: it sets the standard for quality commercial printing – it's fast, economical and clean. The latest Heidelberg presses can run at 12,000 to 15,000 sheets per hour and produce from 500 to practically millions of copies. Computer to plate technology, soya based inks and recycled and FSC approved papers have made litho a highly sustainable printing system.
BIG OR SMALL, LONG OR SHORT, BLACK OR COLOUR
Colours can range from intense black to the lightest yellow. It can reproduce the effects of pencil, pen, crayon and brush as well as watercolours, oil paintings and, of course, photographs.
You can use litho to print on virtually any material, although it's most popular for printing on a wide range of papers and boards. The latest sheet fed presses can print 1,210 x 1,620 mm, although B1 (720 x 1,020 mm) and B2 (520 x 720 mm) are more common.
EFFICIENT
Eight, even twelve, colour, presses have become the norm, enabling the standard four primary colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and black – CMYK*) plus a special colour or colours, varnish and seal to be printed both sides in one pass. At the other end of the scale, two colour presses can print in one colour on both sides of the sheet in the same pass (perfecting), which is ideal for single colour books.
